EVENT REPORT

bbbbrrrrrrrr it was cold..............but the racing was hot thanks to the sprint night-o evgueni planned - great fun! adorning anorak and browsing through the splits there was a fair amount of jockeying for position which might be expected on a short sprint like course. it certainly made for exciting racing. Another first for the DNC as this was the first gramp event to use the locally printed waterproof maps......and they were to scale which was the biggest concern.

On the long course fastest splits were recorded by no less than 7 people with Dan Gooch the star with 6  fastest splits. surprisingly big jon could only manage 1 which is a meagre return by his standards.....but he was never far away and after a slowish start he hauled himself upto 2nd despite going walk about on the way to the finish. biggest loser on the night was yours truly who lost 4 mins on the easiest leg on the course and with it valuable DNC points and the mighty musgoat scalp....however there was an upside as I bagged the bonus points virtue of running up the ‘big’ hill faster than anyone else. All 3 juniors ran really well with all taking fastest leg times - the old guard is under attack. Dan Gooch is the new kid on the block and is already gunning for big jons crown - its about time jon had a serious challenge....no more shopping trips on a wednesday night to keep the competition interesting.

On the short course Sam Gomersall had a good night out taking the lead after the 2nd control and holding on to it for the rest of the course and also had the bonus of taking the bonus points – a satisfying nights work which means he is now setting the pace overall in the mini might cup. Richard oxlade on his return to night-O eventually sorted himself out and cruised into 3rd spot and there was much jockeying for position between kate, rod and lesley. it was also good to see some new names on the short course.....was this just a one off?

worse than blowing 4 mins was losing one of the gramp night controls collecting them at the end! pete and rachel are very kindly going to sweep search dunottar....its out there somewhere*. See you all next week at Glen-O-Dee (dont forget your gaiters) for another exciting episode of the DNC08-09.

A great turn out (30.....maybe a record) especially on the mini night cup with 17 runners. Not the best of nights....cold, damp (with a touch of rain) and icy underfoot but once you are in the forest it doesn’t really matter. Glen O’Dee is a deceptive area – on paper it looks physically and technically easy but on the ground its tough going thanks to all the brashings and technically the western section of the map requires good compass work and map reading (was it just me or is the map ‘iffy’ in places – a topic for the blog) and the eastern section requires quick thinking to sort out the path network. Thanks to Steve in squeezing a couple of excellent courses out of the area. There was potential for making some fairly big mistakes and this seems to be borne out by the split times.

LONG
Big Jon was back in his familiar position at the top but only by the thickness of his 'smelly' helly as new man Dan was only 9 seconds behind and by his own admission would have won had he not had to double back on one leg in search of his dog (no doggy biscuits for him).  Dan had the satisfaction of bagging the bonus points which meant he finished with more points on the night. Pushing the top two were 2 of the newly promoted (from the mini night cup) juniors – finlay and tim – both who ran really well and are certainly giving the established ‘older’ order a real challenge.  I don’t think big jon is going to have things all his own way this time out which i am sure he is more than happy about.

Overall the new kid on the block has sneaked into a 2 point lead which will not last long as dan is heading offshore and will miss next weeks event (dan will be backing the change to the scoring system – see blog (go to gramp or maroc websites for link)for discussion and add your own comment). These 2 are already starting to build a lead with another battle taking shape for 3rd spot between myself, Evgueni and Tim with Finlay also having a say.

SHORT
Chris Low on his 2008-09 DNC debut ran steadily and strongly to bag the win and keep Alastair Marshall also on his debut in 2nd spot. Series leader sam gomersall after a good start had a wobble on leg 5-6 which only meant 3rd place on the night. David Kirk managed one fastest split on the night which also happened to be the bonus leg so he scooped the bonus points.

Overall  sam is starting to build a healthy lead over dave with rod - who had a bad night out after a couple of hefty blunders – holding 3rd spot.

Many thanks to everyone who came along (although there are probably a few who wished they hadn’t) - its great as the planner to have your event supported. It was a relief to have a dry and mild night (apart from the chilly wind blowing across the car park) - perfect for night-O. Tyrebagger or Kirkhill South as it was formerly known is a deceptive area considering it is so close to Aberdeen where generally the forests are pretty average when it comes to orienteering .  On paper it doesn’t look especially technically or physically challenging but for anyone who has run there in the past and for any newcomers on Wednesday night i hope they feel the same as i do.....its a wee cracker of an area. The courses were planned as tough - but fair (do i hear the sucking of air through clenched teeth)- as i could make them and i knew when i threw in a handful of pits i was taking a risk......I have included my ‘planners’ thoughts on some of the controversial ‘pit’ legs at the end of the report. After which you will probably conclude i either need some strong medication or course of intensive therapy. On the night it seemed there were 2 diametrically opposed camps ranging from good to bad / joy to misery / fair to unfair depending on the experience - I hope it hasn’t put anyone off night-O. A big thanks to David Kirk who helped on the day.

Long
Jon is not king of the DNC for no reason and after by his own admission a couple of sluggish races he got his running act together and put the rest of the field to sword. When the going gets tough jon gets going - not for the first time (and i know from experience) the tougher it gets the better jon performs. Breaking 10mins/km was a stonking effort.  Bruce in his first night-o for 2 years was not far off the pace although a couple of his safety first routes 4-5 and 5-6 cost him chunks of time. Bruce had the satisfaction of bagging the bonus points on the bingo leg (sorry about that one i forgot to mention the pit was on the down slope and not the top of the hill) so ended up with more points than jon on the night. Ali picked up a good 3rd spot and is proving a bit of a dark horse. The young guns all fired blanks on the night and roger and dennis were clearly out to test the limits of their batteries. Jons victory has now given him a commanding lead overall - Dan was away – from myself who picked up 30 points as planner/organiser.

Short
John Reeve on his return to night-O after struggling for with long term injury made it look all too easy easing to a 15 minutes victory. Clearly he hasn’t forgotten how to orienteer. Neil was at the head of a group of 5 separated by only a couple of minutes also after making a return to night-O. The ‘wily coyote’ used all his coaching skills on a night when applying good O-technique was key to getting a result. Lesley was the happiest person on the night having finally beaten other half sam (things might have been a bit frosty in the gomersall household later that night). David Kirk managed to bag the bonus points for the second week running which has allowed him to move into second place overall behind Sam despite his ‘off night’ largely due to a walk about on leg 7-8.

Planners thoughts (or lack of)
I set out to plan a couple of courses both of TD5 Technical (as tough as possible) grade with the short only being different in length and as such physically less demanding.  I believe this has always been the philosophy of the event (a discussion for the blog). Both courses were planned where possible to have no dead legs (1-2 on the long being a bit of an exception) where each leg would provide some kind of technical challenge where relevant O-skills would be required to ‘solve the puzzle’. The legs with pits as control sites were risky as pits even during the day can end up as ‘bingo’ controls where luck is required to find them. To avoid this and make them fair i made sure there was an attack point within striking distance where a bearing and pacing would do the job. This applied to controls 2,3 and the finish on the long and control 2 and the finish on the short. Control 1 on the short and 9 on the long was a small depression with hills to the south and north. Unfortunately the pit for control 2 on the short and control 13 on the long was not on top of the hill but on the down slope. I only discovered this on the day as i had not checked this feature when i had a run round the area a couple of weeks before the event. I meant to tell everyone about this on the night but somehow forgot – oops. In hindsight this is the only sight i would have changed although i wouldn’t disagree with anyone if they suggested pits should not be used as control sites especially at night.

The DNC has a break now so have a great Christmas. See you all on the 7th Jan at Balnagowan (i hope the weather is better this year).

Another fine crisp starry night which seemed to be enjoyed by all. Results were tight at the front end of the short course, with 4 people within 2 minutes of each other. Well done to Andrew McMurtrie for coming out on top, and bad luck to Alasdair Marshall - you've no excuse to shadow Douglas any more. A number of people had problems with no 3, a vague hill top with no really good attack point. Perseverence prize of the series so far must go to David Marshall, who eventually found it
after 1 hour of searching.
With Dan away off-shore there was nobody to give Jon such a close run on the Long course, but it was good to see John Reeve returning to form with a strong 2nd place and solid 3rd and 4th places for juniors Tim and Finlay. I had hoped to tempt some of the long course runners to run the long leg from 8-9 by the W route, using good tracks etc. most of the way, but I think everyone chose to come round the E end of the hill. There was supposed to be a bonus leg on both courses, but I forgot to tell anyone which leg it was, so no bonuses this week (anyway Jon's got enough points as it is).
See you at Glen Dye next week.

finished early for course closing time

A record turn out on both courses. Thank you to so many for coming along on another crisp Deeside night - we were lucky to beat the heavy rain that appeared just after we collected in the last controls.

Glen Dye is a great area for planning. Most people seemed to enjoy the courses – and there appears to have been a suitable amount of confusion on the first leg. Oleg had the fastest split on the Short course. Nice try Oleg, but you were running the Long...... so no points there! Instead Douglas Marshall gets the bonus on the Short course (well ahead of Alastair, so definitely no more shadowing) and the points go to wily Roger Coombs on the Long course. I’m looking forward to seeing some interesting routes on Routegadget.

Patrick Low was a clear winner on the Short from Neil McLean, with Alastair Marshall very close behind. Neil obviously has a passion for 2nd place – that’s 3 in a row! The splits are fascinating – even Patrick was 10 minutes slower than the perfect run (the sum of all the fastest legs). Nearly every leg was catching out somebody. Another solid performance from David Kirk puts him ahead of Sam Gomersall who was navigating round Birmingham last night. Looks like the mini night cup is still up for grabs once the discards start to come in to play.

On the Long Oleg put in an appearance to pip big Jon by 25 seconds. Sorry Evgueni but you can’t have his points even though he used your brikke. Looks like the big differences were on Leg 1 and Leg 8. Even so Jon stays well clear on the series leaderboard with no sign of anyone to challenge him unless Dan reappears. There’s plenty of competition for 2nd and 3rd. Evgueni took the night off to shadow Sasha, and Doug very unselfishly sacrificed his run to help me deal with the rush of entries, and to collect in controls. Thanks Doug, and for getting the splits up on Routegadget so quickly.

Apologies to the late comers for the lack of pre-printed maps. Hopefully the need to copy down courses wasn’t too much of a problem. I printed the maximum number that had been used before plus a couple of spares but we still ran out. Another couple of glitches caused confusion for a couple of folk. Yes – the road was marked as out of bounds on the map and I should have mentioned it. This was simply for safety as cars travel down it at speed. And my attempt to set a course closing time obviously caused confusion. Apologies Genevieve as I fear it curtailed your run. Maybe a subject for the blog – as a planner/organiser I believe it’s good to set a clear closure time. 7.30pm was too early – maybe 8.00pm or 8.30pm?

See you next week across the river at Bogendriep.                Richard

Well the rain held off to make it another pretty good evening for Britain’s premier night series! Well it held off until the last three or four folk were toiling down the hill from the last control. Bogendreip whilst having a lot of cracking bits of forest also has plenty of rough and tough stuff. New wind blow and a fair amount of new “tracks” churned up by forest machinery didn’t make it easy in places but at least at this time of year there’s none of the Bogendreip bracken to contend with.

It can also be a pretty unforgiving place if you get it wrong in some areas and the intention, particularly on the long course, was to put in some reasonable length legs running diagonally up or down that would really challenge the navigation. No surprises that there were a few folk caught out.  It took us a good while to get it right when we put the controls out on the previous Saturday and that of course was in daylight.

Most people seemed to cope well with the control pick, at least once they found 125. The top times through the different section 3.58 on the long and 4.06 on the short were pretty impressive. Well done Bruce and Tim.

It can be frustrating to put in a lot of effort to get the navigation spot on and then find the reflective control stands out a mile and maybe you needn’t have bothered being so careful. On reflection (pardon the pun) we probably hung one or two controls too low and should have made them somewhat more visible.

Apologies that we had to make some last minute alterations on the long course. We knew the fence was coming, we just didn’t expect it four days before the event.

Finally thanks Neil for taking the controls in for us on Thursday night – you probably didn’t realise what you let yourself in for but hopefully you enjoyed it!

And thanks Jon for doing the results again!

32 people (another great turn out) made it to the start of the event and 32 people made it to the finish.....somehow! There are probably a few who wished they had stayed at home and watched east enders on the telly instead. It was TOUGH out there! When Big Jon says its tough its tough. Sean and Dennis have got to be congratulated on finding some of the crappiest forest i have run fought my way through in an extended orienteering career. The grot at control 1 was that bad Dan Gooch’s dog clearly didn’t fancy it and let Dan do the rest of the course himself while she gazed at the stars.  The air in Scolty was blue tonight but not from the cold. Four letter curses could be heard echoing across the forest. Still now that i have a large malt whisky in my hand it doesn’t seem so bad after all and looking on the bright side it will make for some interesting banter on the blog.

LONG (and tough)

And only the best are good enough and not surprisingly Jon came out on top although not without his fair share of grief. Dan minus faithful friend followed Jon in with yours truly a few seconds further back. Bruce ‘adventure racer’ Duncan judging by his body language at the end had one a hell of a night so i look forward to his latest grand tour of the forest on route gadget. Still he is off to Patagonia for an adventure race where no doubt the terrain will be more forgiving and he also bagged the bonus points so things are on the up. Sara is starting to show some form and was just off the pace but probably had the most consistent run. The young guns were firing blanks although Tim had slaughtered himself at cross country earlier in the day and is probably now wishing he had stopped there. Hats off to Gary Morrison who showed his usual indomitable spirit in getting round while testing his battery to the limit.

SHORT (and tough)

What a cracker of a race – a real ding dong battle. As predictable as the long is the short is the complete opposite. 1 minute separating the top 3 with neil mclean a minute or so further back despite having a healthy lead half way round. After a dodgy start sam gomersall hauled himself back into the race and after getting his nose in front held off david kirk and chris low....just.  Patrick was consistently faster than everyone else with the exception of the first control where it all went pear shaped...or was he just giving the rest of the field a head start! I don’t know which leg was the bonus so cannot say who got the bonus points although i think everyone should get bonus points for having survived scolty.

Hopefully we will all have recovered by next week and it will be a pleasant lope through the woods of carlogie and don’t forget its event #9 which means the first of the nightmare runs can be discarded.......although the spreadsheet to work it out hasn’t been built yet!!

Doug
